Beth 's Bio
Arundhati Roy..."The trouble is that once you see it, you can't unsee it. And once you've seen it, keeping quiet...becomes as political an act as speaking out."
Born in 1943 in California but raised in Iowa where my rabble-rousing mother just didn't fit in. She kept us on the move with her liberalism...whether it was anti-racism, anti-McCarthyism, or anti-chauvinism...she didn't last long in one place. Although my politics in high school were soft-spoken, I became really active at San Francisco State University, where I was getting my MA in psychology. It was the sixties...racial equality movements and the Viet Nam war. I jumped in.
In the 70s, with the war ending, we thought we'd seen the end of imperialism and wars of aggression. (Right!) I got pregnant and moved to the country in beautiful Northern California. Country farmer, deputy, teacher, retail sales....I went through nearly as many professions as my mother had, but always keeping myself and my 2 young sons active against the new wars which I thought we had stopped in the 70s.
Now in the beginning of the 21st century, I thought I would slip into quiet retirement....tending my garden. But I was struck by the terrible reality that global corporatism was rampant, America was quietly becoming a dictatorship and we are destroying the planet's fragile environment, to boot. To quote Brave New Films...I am hearing a very loud "Pssst! DO SOMETHING!"
